Volunteer & Internship Opportunities

Thank you for Your Support!

The Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) offers several different volunteer or internship opportunities. Since we are home to a wide variety of program activities, volunteers can find an opportunity that best fits their interests.

The ICA believes that volunteer and internship opportunities should be mutually beneficial exchanges, both parties learning and growing from the experience. Below is a list of the current volunteer and internship opportunities.

For more information, please call our Volunteer Coordinator, Caitlin Sarro at 773-769-6363 ext. 316, or email at volunteer@ica-usa.org. To apply for an opportunity please submit a Volunteer-Intern Form online and let us know what you're interested in!

Current Volunteer/Internship Opportunities

Accelerating National Climate Action Internship (Sept-November 2016)

ICA is partnering in cities across the nation to host facilitated conversations with local stakeholders to support climate change efforts in fall of 2016. Interns on this project may:

  • Gain a greater understanding of participatory facilitation methods

  • Remotely attend climate conversations in cities across the nation

  • Track and document partnerships and outcomes of the national conversations

  • Support and attend a Chicago community conversation to accelerate climate action

Accelerate77 Intern
ICA started the accelerate77 program in 2011 to identify and connect local sustainability initiatives across Chicago. ICA continues to organize the Chicago Sustainability Leaders Network, which was a result of the accelerate77 program. Accelerate77 internships may involve:

  • Updating the online database of sustainability initiatives

  • Creating an online calendar for CSLN members to share events

  • Researching Chicago sustainability events to promote on CSLN facebook and calendar

  • Research other networks’ governance structures to inform options for CSLN

Archives Internship

ICA is over 50 years old, and its archives hold over 150 filing cabinets documenting that history! We have a team of dedicated volunteers and always welcome extra help. Archives volunteers may:

  • Join virtual archives hangouts to connect with national colleagues

  • Collect oral narratives from ICA colleagues

  • Accession archive document and make available to online database

Social Media intern

ICA-USA uses a variety of web platforms, including the ICA-USA website, ICA facebook, ICA twitter, and acclerate77 and CSLN facebook pages. We’re in need of a strategy to optimize social media posting that can be carried out by staff after an intern’s term of service. Specific tasks include:

  • Identify opportunities to boost page views and reach of posts on social media

  • Create recommendations or posting guidelines for future postings

  • Debrief staff on findings and lead a ‘training’ on how to implement the recommendations

Create your own internship

ICA programming works at the international, national, citywide, and community wide arenas. Interns can engage in projects across these arenas and grow in a number of skill sets to boost their capacity for engaging communities, evaluating programming, and more! Tasks can include any of the above internships and more to be determined.
